Classroom RevivR FAQs

Q: Where can I find out more about CPR?

A: You can visit the BHF website to learn more about CPR and how to do it.

Q: What equipment do I need to take part?

A: Something to compress on (e.g. a cushion, coat, or backpack), your mobile device and something to prop up your device, such as a book. See the Equipment Guidance section of the teacher guide for more information.

Q: Why does the training not advise to do mouth-to-mouth?

A: This was a precaution which was recommended by Resuscitation Council UK to reduce the potential transmission of COVID-19, as hands only CPR can still be effective at helping to save a life. Additionally, people can be reluctant to perform mouth-to-mouth, especially on strangers and we do not want to discourage people from starting CPR.

Q: Can you perform CPR on a child?

A: Yes, however there are adjustments that you would need to make. Please see our advice page on How to do CPR on a child or baby for more information. However, in cases of emergency if someone is not trained in paediatric CPR, it is better to perform adult CPR on a child than to do nothing at all.

Q: Can you use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) on a child?

A: Use an AED with paediatric pads, or a paediatric defibrillator if available, for children and infants. If no other option is available, a standard AED can be used as this is still better than not receiving a shock at all.

Q: How can you tell if a person isn't breathing normally?

A: Abnormal breathing sounds, for example, gasping, rattling, wheezing or their chest is not moving up and down steadily.

Q: Can I learn CPR effectively using only a cushion to practice on?

A: Although a cushion will not feel the same as performing CPR on a person, it is still effective in learning the technique and compression speed.

Q: How hard does someone need to push when performing CPR?

A: For an adult, press down 5-6 centimetres (2-2.5 inches) at a steady rate of 100-200 bpm, which is about two compressions per second.

Q: How frequently should I refresh my CPR training?

A: Aim for once a year, however the individual version of the RevivR tool is a simple way to quickly refresh your training more frequently.

Q: What if I hurt someone when giving compressions?

A: Sometimes minor injuries can occur, such as a cracked rib, but you should continue to give CPR to help save their life. Giving CPR and using a defibrillator can double a person's chances of survival when they've had a cardiac arrest. A broken rib or other injury can be treated.

Q: Do I need formal qualifications to deliver this training?

A: No, there is no formal qualification needed to perform CPR or deliver this training. This training does not provide you or your pupils with formal qualifications, but you can use certificates to signal completion.

Q: How can I share this training with my friends and family?

A: Please direct friends and family to the individual RevivR training on the BHF website.

Q: Can students share devices?

A: Yes, students can share devices. However, it is preferable if they have their own but if this is not possible, one device between 2 or 3 students is fine.

Q: Can students revisit the scenarios?

A: Yes, you can select 'Back' on the main screen to revisit a scenario in the lesson.

Q: Do students have to use their mobile phone?

A: No, any device with access to a camera and Wi-Fi can be used for this training.

Q: Is the camera footage saved anywhere?

A: The camera does not record any footage of the practice compressions; it is used to track movement to make sure they are being performed at the correct speed.

Q: Do I need to have experience in CPR to teach this lesson?

A: No, you do not need to have experience in CPR to teach this lesson. Classroom RevivR was designed to be facilitated by anyone.

Q: What is the recovery position?

A: The recovery position is the safest position for someone who is not responding to you, but they are breathing normally.

Q: How should I place my hands when giving CPR?

A: Put one hand on top of the other and interlock the fingers on the upper hand. Place the heel of the hand in the centre of the chest.

Q: How would someone respond to a cardiac arrest if they have a disability?

A: If an individual who is unable to safely get in a position where they can perform effective CPR, call 999 immediately and try and get the attention of someone else who is able. The emergency call operator will advise the best course of action.

Q: What is the best way to set up the students' phones so that the camera can track their compressions?

A: The best way to set up students' phones so that compressions are tracked accurately is to prop the phone on a book or a similar object to make sure the pupil's face is aligned with the outline shown on screen.

Q: Is there a way this lesson could be delivered in an SEN classroom?

A: You can consult the Lesson Plan for alternative activities suitable for your class.

Q: What should I check before I lead a lesson?

A: Please check that all the technology is working (e.g. shared screens and devices), that there is enough equipment for pupils to practice compressions and there is enough time to complete the lesson length you have chosen with time for questions at the end.

Q: How do I lead a lesson?

A: Please download and read the PDF guide which can be found on your portal for details on how best to lead a lesson.

Q: How do I give students certificates after completing the lesson?

A: After students have completed a session, you can download and print certificates to celebrate your students' lifesaving achievements through the portal.

Q: How long does it take/ how long is a lesson?

A: We suggest allocating 45-50 minutes for a comprehensive lesson that covers all learning objectives.

Following this completion of the scenarios and assessments, students will evaluate their confidence in performing CPR and using a defibrillator. The lesson will then conclude.

Q: Where do I go for more support?
